In the case of this shot the middle exposure was 1/200th of a second at 200 ISO. Every shot is different as you know. But for sunset shots this is typically ballpark.

Very interesting technique. I have a D300 and a SB-600. I do not have the masking PS skills though, so will give it a test using my own regular HDR technique and can report back how that works.

And, I like the final portrait. I do not think it is too colorful or overly tonemapped or anything like that.

Stephen, no actually you only need the flash to truly fire at full power on the first shot (middle exposure) and then the camera rips through the rest of the sequence with the flash barely providing light at all because it can't keep up. Those extra shots are for the background. If you re-read you'll get it.

I purposely don't use the extra snap on that allows the SB-800 to take 5 AAs and recycle faster. With this technique, a SB-600 suffices as well.

Great tutorial. With my D300 + MB10 grip I should get the framerate. Will give it a try sometime. Although I too have the SB800, I wander if the SB900's recycle rate would keep up? Might need external power-pack?
