Philip, this post is half a year old. At this point I would do the same myself. Wait.

For some waiting might make sense to pick up a used D700 at a good price on eBay because as you know as the next generation is announced and then shipping, the last model tanks in resales percentage wise.

My stance on the D700s and/or D800 (or whatever Nikon releases under the D3s model, is worth waiting for at this point (for me). Photokina just a month+ away and usually announcements will be made just prior to the show anyway.

In my opinion you should never buy a new camera when there is a major photo show on the calendar. I'm the same with everyone else waiting for the big announcement. I'm not too interested in video either , but on a competition between nikon and canon , nikon needs to capture that part of the market

Well I dunno, but the logic is D700s, as it follows from the others. D3s sensor would be perfect. Hi ISO etc. but as for video, I couldn't care less. I bought a D90 on its release because it had a video option and have never used it, not once. So I would be happier if they would up the sensor and make it 18MP instead or even higher. Then I would buy it if it had the ISO capabilities of the D3s. Otherwise there is just the other advantage of dual card slots, but heck I may have been lucky but I am yet to lose data from a single card, I back up after ever shoot. So unless it failed on the spot, I am pretty ok for now, and could usually reshoot imediately if that happened. But bring on the D700s/x/D800 whatever I would just love to see what they come up with next to get people to buy at release. Personally I am happier to buy now a resell if later even at a loss if the uprades are justifiable. I am totally over this 1.5x crop of the DX format. I have a 70-200 2.8 as well that I hardly use. I don't shoot sport so 300mm is a waste, just give me back my 20mm as a 20mm.

I'm going to guess on the d700s side too. It could be something else, but I dunno...the D300 and the D3 got upgraded to 's' and with video features. I can't think that nikon wouldn't do the same with the D700 too.

But, like you. I'm just taking a stab in the dark. no inside info to share here, just educated guesses, at best.

I'm assuming you are patient David. Given the D3s in the USA has been out of stock quite a bit, Nikon will be in no rush to announce the D700s shortly. I just hope they don't wait until the fall for Photokina to announce it. That would be torture. Plus if they do wait that long to announce, it could be until december or early 2011 before enough supply is around to get your hands on one.

I'm hoping they announce/ship much sooner.
