Canon 7D name origination (revealed)
Rumor has it that Canon was so incited about Red’s proclamation of their “DSLR Killer” a.k.a. “Scarlet”, that Canon decided to break rank and not name it the 60D that it is. Instead they named it the 7D to mock RED’s constantly delayed Scarlet. Given RED scrapped their first target date for the Scarlet and still hasn’t been able to bring it’s DSLR Killer it to market, canon is taking an in your face catch me if you can attitude!
Apparently the secret naming convention (formula) is one number for each of the letters that make up the name scarlet.
S + C + A + R + L + E + T = 7 Letters
Hence 7D
I knew there had to be a reason why Canon departed from the last thread of logic that existed in their naming conventions. The 7D after all is just a progression of the 50D and should have been named the 60D if logic and clarity was the goal. But Canon didn’t want clarity, they wanted to make a statement. So at the cost of confusing every Canon user across the globe, they took a shot at RED’s scarlet.
Dem canon folk r sneeky!!!
P.S. Ahhhh, yeaaaaah. I’m bored today.
On a serious note, the 7D has amazing specs. Even more amazing is what you are getting for the price of just $1699. Every single line I read in the release had me impressed… right up until I saw they still have the same crappy 3 AEB for HDR shooters. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! What is it with Canon. Their highest end body has virtually unlimited shots available in shooting a bracket for a custom function. UNLIMITED!!! Why can’t they just allow their other cameras the same damn custom function!
The reason I’m annoyed is because I still have L glass, ST-E2 wireless transmitter and I still have three 580EX II speedlites. I never sold it off when I jumped to the Nikon D3. I’d have purchased a 7D if the damn thing wasn’t crippled for pro HDR capture. Now I’ll just sit back and wait for future releases. Heck maybe I’ll even take a long hard look at the 1D series on the mark IV upgrades.
That is unless they bail on that naming convention too and start using pig latin instead of roman numerals!!!
And yes, I do have the promote control which I’m sure will work with the 7D via the USB connection, but at a much slower frame rate than the blazing 8fps the 7D would get natively in an AEB sequence. So I’ll be skipping the 7D completely just because of the crippled AEB function.

I was wondering if the Promote will work on the Promote. Promote’s company might have to launch a firmware update in order to get it working. So I’ll probably hesitate a month before purchasing it.

7D seems like it is packed with more features than the 5D MKii. now i am having a hard time choosing which one to buy.

Charles: What do you mean will the promote work on the promote?
October 17th, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Was half paying attention when I wrote that. I meant the “7D will work on the Promote.”
And to answer that – yes it does since I’ve tested it. It’s fairly fast with the shutter cable.

Thanks for the reply and updating that the 7D works with the promote control. As long as canon does not change their USB protocol, then the promote should work with each subsequent release of canon bodies (until someday when maybe the whole USB connection is dropped for some other maybe). Ditto for Nikon.

Last I heard, Nikon did change their USB protocol with the D5000 which now houses both USB and video in it. The Promote team is currently working on providing people with a solution.

Thanks for the update Charles. I’ve noticed that a few cameras have been moved around a bit since I first purchased it. I don’t think they were able to fully test all the models they had grouped together.
On another note, Arty is trying to test it out on Sony soon. I’m almost hoping it doesn’t work just so I don’t do something stupid like buy MORE gear!!! LOL!
Thanks again for your contribution and reply

Maybe they can upgrade the AEB function I’m future firmware updates?
January 17th, 2010 at 1:31 PM
You’d think that they’d be able to.
I talked with a Canon rep about this and she told me that Canon never released a firmware that added functionality to any of their devices, only firmware to fix things which weren’t working properly and to add newer lenses to a camera’s database. So, I wouldn’t go around holding one’s breath.

Charles, that rep forgot about the firmware added to the 5D mark II that added full manual control in video mode? Plus, canon announced they are releasing firmware this year to upgrade the 5D mark II to be able to shoot 24fps as well. She might want to follow her own company!!! LOL! Not laughing at you Charles, just the rep who clearly is giving a corporate response without even thinking about what they were saying. Clueless.
As for AEB crippled in anything but pro bodies, I’m sure someone at Canon had a reason back in the day. Like “well, only pros need the extended AEB so we’ll only put that on the 1D and 1Ds line”… or something like that. Hey, truth is it is the same with Nikon, but to a lesser extent.
At least the D200/D300/D300s line also has 9 AEB in addition to D2x/D3/D3s and D700 models. Price wise the 20D/30D/40D/50D/7D falls in that comparable line, but Nikon allows more AEB at that price point whereas Canon doesn’t. I know you probably know this, I’m just complaining.
I’m not a fanboy anything when it comes to any of these companies. They are all just toys. I complain when I know things can be changed though. It is not unreasonable of us to want more AEB. I’ve seen guys sell their canon body and lenses and jump to Nikon just to get those extended AEB capabilities of Nikon in the D200/300 so whether canon admits it or realizes it they have lost customers by holding back on that one piece of firmware they could change in future models. Hell look, they got the 7D to +/-3.0 on the steps whereas the 20D thru 50D were all 2.0EV jumps. We all know this can be tweaked.
And even though the 5D mark II got firmware to increase/add functionality despite the Canon reps statement… I wouldn’t expect an AEB firmware upgrade on any past model. It was the insane screams from clients all over the world begging for manual video control and the hunger for video that led canon to do it. AEB is not a feature that is a must have for the majority of DSLR owners (percentage wise).

I am screaming for an AEB upgrade for my 5d Mk II.
Especially since the new Ts2 has 5 steps for hdr……

Interesting to read people’s views on Nikon vs Canon. I actually chose the Nikon d300s which offers a 9 shot AEB set. It works well for my HDR work.
